This course will focus on milk hygiene and the role of the farm veterinary surgeon in monitoring, investigating and ensuring hygienic milk reaches the supply chain. Interpretation of bactoscan, Total Bacterial Count, and bacteriology/differential counts will be discussed with real herd examples, as well as other areas that are likely to impact on milk quality including water quality and bedding (the latter will also include recent research and findings from the AHDB Dairy Recycled Manure Solids work). Finally, the day will also incorporate an update on a selective approach to antibiotic Dry Cow Therapy, in the light of the recent RUMA guidelines on antimicrobial use in the dairy sector.

This course will discuss the role of the milking machine and milking routine in minimising the risk of intra-mammary infection. Delegates will be reminded of the function of components of the milking machine and risks that poor maintenance poses to udder health. Milking routine and approaches to problem-solving will be discussed and will be followed by a farm walk to discuss aspects of environmental management to ensure cows are presented to the parlour with excellent hygiene scores.

The course will be run at the offices of Synergy Farm Health AND at a local dairy farm and will be limited to 12 delegates - please ensure you have clean and disinfected protective clothing and boots.

This course will review mammary gland immunity and consider its role in the context of the mammary microbiome.The course will focus on the importance in some herds of vaccination, both when considering coliform infections and reducing the risk of Staphylococcus spp. infection, as well as the role that immune restoratives may play on the risk of intra-mammary infection. The role of minerals and vitamins will be discussed and the impact of the presence or absences of minor mastitis pathogens will be considered. Throughout the day, the latest research in some of these areas will be presented for discussion and critique.

This course is aimed at more recent graduates and younger members of the practice team, as well as more experienced veterinary surgeons and consultants who wish to review and consolidate their knowledge around areas of bovine mastitis and its control. This course will review key concepts in mastitis epidemiology and aetiology, illustrated with examples. Diagnostics and treatment are summarised for both lactation and at drying-off, including selective dry cow therapy. Finally, key areas of control are discussed, with a focus on the management of the environment in dairy herds.
